About the Yogic diet

  • It provides balanced nutrition for body
  • It is generally good for people experiencing irritable bowel syndrome ( IBS)
  • It is low in FODMAPS restrictions has improved symptom control in people with other functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID)
  • It helps mitigate inflammatory processes in the body through frequent use of beneficial ingredients, such as turmeric ( Curcuma).
  • Sentient food is alkaline, Alkaline food is the opposite of acid-forming food. Eating more alkaline food is an excellent way of cleansing the body and curing it of boils, acne, flue and many other diseases. Nearly all fruits and vegetables are alkaline and very good for your health.
  • It is generally gluten free
  • In most cases, it is appropriate for vegan diets (in-case you use milk and honey, we try our best to suggest alternative vegan ingredients)
  • It is a true yogic diet.

The yogic vegetarian diet is based on how food affects the mind as well as the body and that’s what makes it a bit of a different from other types of vegetarian systems. Spiritual aspirant eating a sentient diet will experience faster and deeper progress than with other diets.

What is a Sentient/Sattvic Diet?
Vegetarian diets have become popular during the past 40 years, but the vegetarian diet that is important to those who practice yoga and meditation is still not well understood. The yogic vegetarian diet is centered around foods that affect the mind as well as the body, which makes it different from other types of vegetarian systems.

Gauging the effect of food on the mind requires an understanding of the philosophy behind yoga. According to yoga philosophy, the force of nature works in three primary styles, and the different foods are governed by each one of these alternating styles.

Thus the yogic diet has three food classifications:

Sentient / Sattvik Food: Nature’s sentient principle dominates foods which are beneficial to both the body and the mind. These foods include most fruits and vegetables, grains, legumes (beans), organic milk products, nuts, herbs and mild spices. Note that there are some vegetable products which are not sentient: lentils (taken at night are static, during the day they are mutative), red lentils, onion, mushrooms, garlic and white eggplant are static; the durian fruit (of South East Asia) is also static.

Mutative / Rajasik Food: The natural force that creates motion and change in the universe is predominant in some foods. Mutative foods are beneficial to the body and may or may not be beneficial to the mind. These foods are stimulants, and some examples are: coffee, tea, chocolate, ginseng, carbonated drinks, and strong spices. Taken in moderate amounts, mutative foods are not harmful to spiritual progress.

Static / Tamasik Food: There is a static force that creates inertia in the universe. This force solidifies and binds consciousness. A static quality characterizes some foods, and when eaten, they make the mind dull and drowsy. These foods are detrimental to mental concentration and meditation. They also stimulate the lower chakras (psycho-physical controlling points) of the body and the mental propensities controlled by these centers, making it more difficult for the aspirant to maintain mental purity.
In terms of vital energy static foods are harmful to both body or mind, and they are not eaten by yogis. Static foods include meat, fish, eggs, onions, mushrooms and garlic. Alcohol, tobacco, drugs, as well as rotting or spoiled foods, also are static.

Those who want to succeed in meditation and yoga will get significant benefits by following a diet that includes foods from the sentient category, and by avoiding the static foods. A sentient diet is especially important for those who wish to perform yoga postures on a daily basis.

Travel Information & Extras

Arrival & Departure

You are welcome to arrive a day earlier and or depart a day later if that works better with your flights. The suggested contribution per night, excluding food is $25. Beside the regular routine there are no programs. It would be great if you can see how to help with the preparations for the event or the clean up after.

By Flight:
Fly to Mexico City (MEX*) and take the regular Airport bus to Cuernavaca Casino. There is a bus terminal in the airport itself. From Cuernavaca there are many buses going to Xochicalco. Just ask which one goes via the autopista (toll road), the other route is very slow. Get down at the Oxxo (convienience store like 7/11) in Xochicalco and walk as per the instructions below. Below you can also find more details on how to get to us from Cuernavaca.
* The airport code to look for is MEX (Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez), there is a second (new) airport with the code NLU (Felipe Ángeles International Airport), unless you know what you are doing, do not fly to this one. There are hardly any transportation options beside taxis at 2-3 times the ordinary fare. You'd spend around US$75 to get to the bus station from where you can get a bus to our place.

By Car: (In case you have one or rent one)
Get on the autopista/toll road from Mexico City to Acapulco. About 25Km after Cuernavaca there is an exit to Alpuyeca, cross this town following the signs to Xochicalco (direction Miacatlan) Once in Xochicalco turn right at the Oxxo taking the main road towards the pyramids. After about 250m there is a health center on the left. Just after that turn left on the unpaved road and go down for 150 meters. You'll see our center and the welcome banner for the retreat. There is also a Ananda Marga sign on the main road.

Google maps will get you there by entering "Ananda Madhumaya Retreat Center, Xochicalco, Morelos" in the search bar.

By Bus from Taxquena CDMX:
1) There are hourly busses (Pullman de Morelos) that passes Xochicalco. When booking your ticket you may have to ask for El Rodeo or Miacatlan (Morelos) as they may not know Xochicalco, but the bus will stop at the Oxxo in Xochicalco if you ask the driver. It's 5 min walk from there and the instructions are above.

2) There are also many busses that stop at the caseta (toll place) at Alpuyeca. From the caseta you can take a taxi (if available) otherwise there are combies to Alpuyeca itself (takes 5 minutes) and there you can change to one to Xochicalco (takes 10 minutes) If they go to Xochicalco itself ask them to stop at the health center, if not get off at the Oxxo. You can also give us a call.

3) Take a bus to Cuernavaca (Casino or Central) and follow the instructions below.

By Bus from Cuernavaca:
From either near the terminal Casino or Central there are many buses that would stop in Xochicalco. Again you may have to ask for El Rodeo or Miacatlan. Xochicalco is just before El Rodeo and the bus can drop you at the Oxxo. Just make sure that the bus you take takes the autopista (Mibus and others) and not the libre (Lasser Bus) as that takes one hour more.

By Bus from other towns:
Best to get to either Cuernavaca or CDMX and then follow the instructions for those towns already mentioned above.

I trust one of those options will get you here easily. If really needed I can pick you up at the caseta, especially in case it's already late. Do let me know in advance your arrival time so we can plan and you don't have to wait too long.

Arriving early on the arrival day
Most of the time you will be welcome to arrive any time, we just can't guarantee that your room will be ready. The registration will normally open 2-3 hours before the program commences. See if you can help out with the preparations or you could go and explore Xochicalco 🙂

Departing late on the departure day
This will also not be a problem but you may have to leave your room so we can clean up. If you would join an other meal let us know. Naturally see if you can help.

Extra days:
If anyone wants to arrive earlier and or depart later than the official dates, you are most welcome. Please let us know in advance so we can make sure we can accommodate you and have enough food 🙂 Naturally a contribution for the extra days and meals will be much appreciated. We suggest a donation of $25 per day excluding food. Your help with any needed work would naturally be much appreciated but not expected.

COVID-19

As we all know, there is a Covid-19 virus infecting the population and many people have died. Whether the situation is better or worse than what the media informs us, we consider that being with many people may increase the possibility of getting infected or transmitting the virus to others.

Whether or not you will be affected depends on your immune system. Most people have no or few symptoms, but some people have severe symptoms and some even die from it. So please consider carefully your participation in this program, you are responsible for your health condition and situation and not only yours but also others.

For example, if you know you have Covid or have been in contact with people in the last 10 days who were infected that time please wait for a future event before attending. Also if you consider yourself in a risk group, live or work with people in a risk group, it will probably also be better to wait for a next event. Again you have a responsibility both for you own health and the collective welfare.

This program is open for everyone, vaccinated or not. If you like to wear a face-mask or not is also your choice, but for your information, most people who come decide not to wear it. Being vaccinated may protect you to a certain extend though at the same time it may not prevent others getting infected through you.

Washing hands, covering your mouth when sneezing (in your elbow), not hugging or kissing to greet each other (we have our beautiful "Namaskar" for that!) reduces the likelihood contracting or passing on many diseases.

Personally I think that if you are in good health, EAT HEALTHY and most importantly keep your mind in a POSITIVE flow, the risk is low and we are happy to welcome you all. Still the decision and responsibility is yours.
