Dadhicii Divas – March 5

A Day of Supreme Sacrifice, Unwavering Courage, and Eternal Commitment to Dharma

Dadhicii Divas, observed every year on March 5, stands as one of the most solemn yet profoundly inspiring observances in Ananda Marga. It is a sacred tribute to those great souls — eternally known as Dadhiicis — who have selflessly offered their lives for the establishment of Bha’gavat Dharma, the eternal cosmic ideology of bliss, righteousness, and universal welfare as revealed by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti (Baba).

Baba Himself gave this unique designation: when Christians sacrifice for Christendom they are called martyrs, when Muslims die for Islam they are called shahiids — but when His own children lay down their lives for the expansive, all-embracing ideals of Bha’gavat Dharma — the path that unites Neohumanistic love, PROUT’s socio-economic justice, and spiritual liberation for every being — they are forever honored as Dadhiicis. This term carries no narrow religious connotation; it represents the highest form of ideological devotion and selflessness for the welfare of the entire cosmos.

The Archetype: Maharṣi Dadhiici and the Power of Supreme Renunciation

The name draws directly from the ancient Vedic sage Maharṣi Dadhiici, one of the greatest rishis in Puranic tradition. When the devas (divine forces) were defeated by the asuras (demonic forces) in cosmic battle, they approached Dadhiici with a desperate request: only a weapon forged from his indestructible bones could turn the tide.

Without hesitation, without anger, without any thought of personal glory, Dadhiici renounced his physical body. His bones became the vajra — Indra’s invincible thunderbolt — which shattered the asuras and restored balance to creation.

Baba elevated this story as the ideal for spiritual revolutionaries: true sacrifice is not martyrdom driven by hatred or fanaticism, but a conscious, loving offering for the greater good. A Dadhiici does not seek death; he or she lives fully in service — practicing sadhana, serving humanity, fighting exploitation with sentient anger — and when dharma demands the ultimate price, accepts it with equanimity, knowing the ideology is immortal.

The Historical Foundation: March 5, 1967 – The Anandanagar Tragedy

Dadhicii Divas was born from a heart-rending event on March 5, 1967, at Ananda Nagar, the spiritual and ideological heart of Ananda Marga in Purulia, West Bengal.

A large, violent mob — instigated by local communist groups and anti-social elements fiercely opposed to Baba’s revolutionary teachings on spiritual socialism, moral governance, and the end of exploitation — launched a savage attack on the peaceful campus. Armed with iron rods, knives, acid, and sheer brutality, they targeted unarmed residents who were simply living and practicing Ananda Marga’s ideals.

A small group of dedicated Wholetimers (WTs) and Margiis stood their ground to protect the sacred land and the ideology. Vastly outnumbered, they fought with extraordinary courage and non-violence in spirit. Five valiant souls ultimately gave their lives amid the onslaught:

  • Acarya Abhedananda Avadhuta
  • Acarya Saccidananda Avadhuta
  • Bharat Kumar (a dedicated brahmacarya)
  • Prabhas Kumar
  • Avadh Kumar

These five Dadhiicis were brutally assaulted; their bodies were mutilated in the violence. Hundreds more residents were injured, but the attackers could not break the spirit of Ananda Marga. Baba, deeply moved by their devotion and sacrifice, declared March 5 as Dadhiicii Divas — a fixed annual day to honor not only these five, but every soul who has sacrificed life or endured severe hardship for the ideology throughout Ananda Marga’s history.

The Spiritual Essence: Sacrifice as the Pinnacle of Devotion

Baba taught that the highest expression of love for the Cosmic Father/Mother is to serve creation without limit. A Dadhiici’s act is revolutionary: it directly counters dogma, exploitation, narrow sentiments, and demonic forces with the invincible power of Neohumanistic love and ideological integrity.

“Those who are dedicated to Dharma, who are bound to Dharma, are sure to be victorious.”

— Shrii Shrii Anandamurti

And again: sacrifice for Dharma is never in vain — it plants seeds that blossom into a world where exploitation ends, where every being is treated as an expression of the Divine, and where bliss prevails.

Dadhicii Divas therefore evokes a powerful duality:

  • Profound sorrow for the physical loss of these luminous souls
  • Radiant joy and strength in the knowledge that their sacrifice has made the ideology indestructible

Their spirit lives eternally in every Margii who meditates deeply, serves selflessly, stands against injustice, and builds Baba’s dream of a just, exploitation-free society.

How We Observe Dadhicii Divas – A Living Tribute

Margiis around the world observe March 5 with reverence, reflection, and renewed commitment:

  • 12-hour fasting (from sunrise to sunset) as a mark of respect, purification, and solidarity with the Dadhiicis’ selflessness.
  • Extended akhanda kiirtan — continuous chanting of “Baba Nam Kevalam” to invoke Baba’s grace and connect heart-to-heart with the immortal spirit of the Dadhiicis.
  • Group Dharma Chakra (collective meditation) to draw inner strength and send protective vibrations to all who serve dharma.
  • Remembrance programs — reading Baba’s relevant discourses (from Ananda Vacanamrtam, seminars, or related teachings on sacrifice and ideological fight), sharing stories of the 1967 events and other Dadhiicis.
  • Narayan Seva — preparing and distributing high-quality, delicious food to the needy, as the most fitting offering: service is the true homage to those who served unto death.
  • Personal and collective vows — renewing our pledge to live the ideology more intensely, to protect dharma, to fight adharma with positive force, and to never waver in the face of opposition.

In Ananda Nagar and major sector centers, special observances often take place at Dadhicii Hill or memorials: silent homage, Prabhat Samgiita singing, ideological discussions, and collective resolve.

Dadhicii Divas is never merely a day of mourning. It is a fiery call to action: to become living embodiments of the courage, devotion, and service exemplified by those immortal souls.

A Eternal Message to All Dadhiicis

To the Dadhiici Five and to every Dadhiici who followed in their footsteps:
Your sacrifice is the eternal flame that lights our path.
Your courage burns in our hearts.
Your devotion fuels our mission.
We bow in deepest gratitude and rise with unbreakable resolve.

May Baba’s infinite grace empower every sadhaka to carry forward this legacy — until dharma reigns supreme, exploitation is eradicated, and ananda envelops the entire universe.

Jai Guru! Jai Ananda Marga! 🌺
